　　The Doll is an adaptation of the novel, The Doll (novel) by Bolesław Prus, which is regarded by many as one of the finest Polish novels ever written and, along with Pharaoh (novel), made Bolesław Prus a potential candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature. The influence of Émile Zola is evident, and some have compared the novel to Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert; both were Prus&♯39;s contemporaries. The movie, however, may be more compared to Stendhal&♯39;s Le Rouge et le Noir, (The Red and the Black).
　　The Doll constitutes a panorama of life in Warsaw between 1878 and 1879, and at the same time is a subtle story of three generations of Polish idealists, their psychological complications, their involvement in the history of the nineteenth century, social dramas, moral problems and the experience of tragic existence. At the same time this story describes the disintegration of social relationships and the growing separation of a society whose aristocratic elite spreads the models of vanity and idleness. In the bad air of a backward country, anti-Semitic ideas are born, valuable individuals meet obstacles on their way, and scoundrels are successful.
　　This poetic love story follows a nouveau riche merchant, Stanislaw Wokulski, through a series of trials and tribulations occasioned by his obsessive passion for an aristocratic beauty, Izabela Lecka, played by the famous Polish actress, Beata Tyszkiewicz.
　　Plot:
　　As a descendant of an impoverished Polish noble family, young Wokulski is forced to work as a waiter at Hopfer&♯39;s, a Warsaw restaurant, while dreaming of a life in science. After taking part in the failed 1863 Uprising against Tsarist Russia, he is sentenced to exile in Siberia. On eventual return to Warsaw, he becomes a salesman at Mincel&♯39;s haberdashery. Marrying the late owner&♯39;s widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to set up a partnership with a Russian merchant he had met while in exile. The two merchants go to Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and Wokulski makes a fortune supplying the Russian Army. The enterprising Wokulski now proves a romantic at heart, falling in love with Izabela, daughter of the vacuous, bankrupt aristocrat, Tomasz Łęcki. In his quest to win Izabela, Wokulski begins frequenting theatres and aristocratic salons; and to help her financially distressed father, founds a company and sets the aristocrats up as shareholders in his business.The indolence of these aristocrats, who secure with their pensions, are too lazy to undertake new business risks, frustrates Wokulski. His ability to make money is respected but his lack of family and social rank is condescended to. Because of his "help" (in secret) to Izabela&♯39;s impecunious but influential father, the girl becomes aware of his affection. 　　小偷林田义助曾四次被捕入狱。一天他在温泉认识了女招待桃子并与之同居，还把偷来的东西送给她，却因事情败露被警察安东抓获。在被保释出来后又去偷仓库的晚上，义助碰上了九个大个子男人。第二天附近的车站发生了火车脱轨事件，义助作为嫌疑犯再次入狱。在狱中他见到了被称为是制造火车脱轨事件的三名犯人，但三人均不承认是其所为，这引起义助对那九个大个子男人的怀疑。出狱之后义助决定重新做人，认识了阿花并与之结婚，只是并没有告诉阿花自己的过去。律师藤本请义助做火车脱轨事件的目击证人，安东却威胁义助如不按照警方的话去做就抖出他的前科。为了三名无辜者义助决定实话实说。安东当众揭短，义助仍然将当晚之事向法庭作了真实的陈述……
　　故事根据1961年的“松川事件”内部素材改编。这是一部充满喜剧色彩的影片，非常辛辣地对警察当局的虚伪进行了讽刺，当然最重要的还是刻划了义助这个虽有多次小偷前科但仍然不失善良本性的人物形象。导演山本萨夫因敢于大胆揭露日本政界、财界上层人物的内幕而被称为社会派大师，是首创独立制片并坚持自己信念的少数几个导演之一。影片曾获1965年《电影旬报》十佳奖第四名。

　　Upon receipt of a letter from Lily telling Tora that she would like to see him before she dies, Tora rushes to Okinawa, where Lily has fainted during one of her performances. Although five years has passed since they parted, the former couple continues to care about each other, and Tora nurses Lily to health. The personal favourite of Yamada Yoji , Tora-san&♯39;s Tropical Fever was the only film re-released (with added scenes) by the director to commemorate Atsumi Kiyoshi after the superstar&♯39;s death.

　　Ukrainian surgeon Serhiy is captured by the Russian military forces in the conflict zone in Eastern Ukraine and while in captivity, he is exposed to horrifying scenes of humiliation, violence and indifference towards human life. After his release, he returns to his comfortable middle-class apartment and tries to find a purpose in life by rebuilding his relationship with his daughter and ex-wife. He learns how to be a human being again, how to be a father and help his daughter, who needs his love and support.

　　戴茜（杰西卡·坦尼Jessica Tandy 饰）小时候在贫民地方长大，丈夫生意的崛起才让他们家过上富足日子，所以戴茜非常节俭。现在她年事已高，不能自己开车了，儿子为她请来黑人司机霍克（摩根·弗里曼 Morgan Freeman饰），但是戴茜却十分不喜欢。她起初逃避出行 ，因为不想让霍克当上司机，后来她才觉得，儿子付了钱却不用他干活，似乎太不划算，于是终于给了霍克第一次为自己开车的机会。
　　霍克是一个非常善良淳朴的男人，他知道自己不被接受，并没有把不快放在心里。相反地，他处处关心戴茜的生活，也慢慢了解戴茜坚守原则的执著性格。戴茜对霍克的排斥开始慢慢消融，直至几年间她终于发现，霍克是一个很值得信赖的朋友。
　　于是，戴茜教会不识字的霍克传授认字，霍克也成为了戴茜晚年最贴心的朋友。

　　故事讲述了小说家俊熙（李慧英 饰）远道而来拜访后辈的书店，独自散步并遇见电影导演夫妇和演员，并说服女演员（金敏喜 饰）一起拍电影的故事。

　　帕里斯（罗伯特·卡明斯 Robert Cummings 饰）和德雷克（罗纳德·里根 Ronald Reagan 饰）是青梅竹马的玩伴，虽然他们的性格大相径庭，但两人之间的感情却非常的要好。帕里斯爱上了医生亚历山大（克劳德·雷恩斯 Claude Rains 饰）的女儿卡桑德拉（贝蒂·菲尔德 Betty Field 饰），然而，卡桑德拉却被严厉的父亲软禁在家中，十分的痛苦。
　　那边厢，个性轻浮的德雷克邂逅了名为路易斯（南茜·科曼 Nancy Coleman 饰）的女子，当德雷克前往路易斯家提亲时，他因为自己的风流韵事而遭到了路易斯家人们的拒绝。之后，德雷克又遇见了兰迪（安·谢里登 Ann Sheridan 饰），虽然兰迪出身于一个非常贫穷的家庭之中，但是两人还是很快就坠入了情网。

　　19世纪的英国，阶级隔阂还十分分明。这天，英国上层出身的露西（海伦娜•邦汉•卡特 Helena Bonham Carter 饰）和表姐夏洛特一起佛罗伦撒度假，不巧，露西住的酒店的房间看不到风景。同时来住店的英国父子两乔治（朱利安•桑兹 Julian Sands 饰）和他父亲见状，热心的父亲要和露西换一间房，因为他的房里能看到风景。露西开始不同意，在好心的店主的劝说下最终她同意了。
　　乔治和露西很快堕入了爱河，然而下等阶层出身的乔治身上有着很多露西看不惯的“陋习”，夏洛特也不甚喜欢乔治，双方在交往中闹了不少“笑话”。一次，乔治“越轨”吻了露西一下，露西认为乔治太过“不合礼仪”，于是独自回了英国。
　　乔治很快也回了国，然而，这时露西已经订了婚……

　　司南（岛吾·德米尔考 Doğu Demirkol 饰）是一个土耳其男孩，刚刚从大学毕业的他正在准备出版自己的第一部小说。然而，出版小说需要启动资金，这是目前司南最缺乏的东西，无奈之下，他只得返回故乡恰纳卡莱省的乡下，在那里，居住着和司南久未联系的父亲伊德里斯（穆拉特·杰姆吉尔 Murat Cemcir 饰）。
　　司南本来有一个非常幸福的家庭，然而伊德里斯染上了赌博的恶习，这个恶习让他的家庭最终走向了分崩离析，这也是司南记恨自己父亲的最大原因。伊德里斯本来是一名德高望重的教师，赌博令他失去一切，还背负上了巨额债务，儿子的回归让伊德里斯不得不再度面对自己失败的过去。
