　　The Doll is an adaptation of the novel, The Doll (novel) by Bolesław Prus, which is regarded by many as one of the finest Polish novels ever written and, along with Pharaoh (novel), made Bolesław Prus a potential candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature. The influence of Émile Zola is evident, and some have compared the novel to Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert; both were Prus&♯39;s contemporaries. The movie, however, may be more compared to Stendhal&♯39;s Le Rouge et le Noir, (The Red and the Black).
　　The Doll constitutes a panorama of life in Warsaw between 1878 and 1879, and at the same time is a subtle story of three generations of Polish idealists, their psychological complications, their involvement in the history of the nineteenth century, social dramas, moral problems and the experience of tragic existence. At the same time this story describes the disintegration of social relationships and the growing separation of a society whose aristocratic elite spreads the models of vanity and idleness. In the bad air of a backward country, anti-Semitic ideas are born, valuable individuals meet obstacles on their way, and scoundrels are successful.
　　This poetic love story follows a nouveau riche merchant, Stanislaw Wokulski, through a series of trials and tribulations occasioned by his obsessive passion for an aristocratic beauty, Izabela Lecka, played by the famous Polish actress, Beata Tyszkiewicz.
　　Plot:
　　As a descendant of an impoverished Polish noble family, young Wokulski is forced to work as a waiter at Hopfer&♯39;s, a Warsaw restaurant, while dreaming of a life in science. After taking part in the failed 1863 Uprising against Tsarist Russia, he is sentenced to exile in Siberia. On eventual return to Warsaw, he becomes a salesman at Mincel&♯39;s haberdashery. Marrying the late owner&♯39;s widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to set up a partnership with a Russian merchant he had met while in exile. The two merchants go to Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and Wokulski makes a fortune supplying the Russian Army. The enterprising Wokulski now proves a romantic at heart, falling in love with Izabela, daughter of the vacuous, bankrupt aristocrat, Tomasz Łęcki. In his quest to win Izabela, Wokulski begins frequenting theatres and aristocratic salons; and to help her financially distressed father, founds a company and sets the aristocrats up as shareholders in his business.The indolence of these aristocrats, who secure with their pensions, are too lazy to undertake new business risks, frustrates Wokulski. His ability to make money is respected but his lack of family and social rank is condescended to. Because of his "help" (in secret) to Izabela&♯39;s impecunious but influential father, the girl becomes aware of his affection. 　　大炊介高央は田宮神剣流道場の嫡男で、秀才の誉れが高かったが、師範代で妹みぎわの許婚者である吉岡進之助を道場で斬殺してからは、常軌を逸した行動がめだった。愛息の狂態を案じた父高茂は思案のあげく学友四人をつけて紀州の田宮家に閉じ込めた。庄屋の瀬木久兵衛や百姓娘うめを斬ったり娘なおを山菱に拉致したりの相かわらずの行状を知った高茂は、心ならずも高央の命を縮めることを決意柾木兵衛を送った。幼友達の兵衛は紀州に出かけて高央の行状を探ると意外にも斬られた男は女ぐせの悪い者ばかりということがわかった。高央乱心の噂は幕府にまで聞え、高央を殺すべく家老の帯刀が紀州にやってい来た。兵衛が山葵に高央を訪れ詰問したところ、高央はショッキングな事実を告白するのだった。高央はかつて吉岡から自分が不義の子であると知らされた。以来高央は女ぐせの悪い男達をみると狂気の様に斬ったり、家庭の複雑な娘達のよき相談相手となっていたというのだ。刀を抜いてすごんだ侍十数人もこの事実を聞いて刀を下すのだった。

　　American psychologist John Holden arrives in London to participate in a symposium aiming to expose witchcraft and devil-worship as a fraud, with attention centered on a cult run by a Julian Karswell. Debarking his plane, Holden learns that the symposium leader, Henry Harrington, has suddenly died and he is now in charge. What only the audience knows is that Harrington was clearly killed by a demon, apparently summoned by Karswell to avenge his persecution. Despite both threatening and cajoling behavior by Karswell, Holden determines to proceed, though the only cult member willing to talk about his experiences is in a prison psychiatric ward, catatonic after allegedly killing yet another cult member. However, Harrington&♯39;s niece, Joanna, believes, based on her uncle&♯39;s notes, that Karswell may indeed have some satanic powers derived from an ancient tome in an obscure language which he has been able to translate, and attempts to warn the skeptic Holden. Karswell&♯39;s mother also attempts to warn Holden off. However, the thing which begins to most get to Holden are the occasional, but mounting, sensory and mental disturbances he begins experiencing after an encounter with Karswell, and the discovery that, during this encounter, Karswell secretly slipped a slip of parchment with a curse in runic symbols on it into Holden&♯39;s belongings, a parchment identical to one Harrington recorded having had passed to him in a similar manner shortly before his death... 　　本片属于波尔电影，也就是反映在法国的阿尔及利亚后裔人的电影作品。导演沙里夫是阿尔及利亚后裔，本片根据他的自传体小说改编，非常直白地将当时法国社会的阴暗现实反映出来。影片最后点出主题，渴望拆除种族的藩篱，超越肤色和种族和平友好地生活下去。整部电影的叙事手法平平，只是倒叙一段类似“戏中戏”处理得较有复古味道，不失讽刺韵味，人物的心理描写也细致准确，属于一部表现社会底层青年生活的社会写实作品。
