　　The Doll is an adaptation of the novel, The Doll (novel) by Bolesław Prus, which is regarded by many as one of the finest Polish novels ever written and, along with Pharaoh (novel), made Bolesław Prus a potential candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature. The influence of Émile Zola is evident, and some have compared the novel to Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert; both were Prus&♯39;s contemporaries. The movie, however, may be more compared to Stendhal&♯39;s Le Rouge et le Noir, (The Red and the Black).
　　The Doll constitutes a panorama of life in Warsaw between 1878 and 1879, and at the same time is a subtle story of three generations of Polish idealists, their psychological complications, their involvement in the history of the nineteenth century, social dramas, moral problems and the experience of tragic existence. At the same time this story describes the disintegration of social relationships and the growing separation of a society whose aristocratic elite spreads the models of vanity and idleness. In the bad air of a backward country, anti-Semitic ideas are born, valuable individuals meet obstacles on their way, and scoundrels are successful.
　　This poetic love story follows a nouveau riche merchant, Stanislaw Wokulski, through a series of trials and tribulations occasioned by his obsessive passion for an aristocratic beauty, Izabela Lecka, played by the famous Polish actress, Beata Tyszkiewicz.
　　Plot:
　　As a descendant of an impoverished Polish noble family, young Wokulski is forced to work as a waiter at Hopfer&♯39;s, a Warsaw restaurant, while dreaming of a life in science. After taking part in the failed 1863 Uprising against Tsarist Russia, he is sentenced to exile in Siberia. On eventual return to Warsaw, he becomes a salesman at Mincel&♯39;s haberdashery. Marrying the late owner&♯39;s widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to set up a partnership with a Russian merchant he had met while in exile. The two merchants go to Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and Wokulski makes a fortune supplying the Russian Army. The enterprising Wokulski now proves a romantic at heart, falling in love with Izabela, daughter of the vacuous, bankrupt aristocrat, Tomasz Łęcki. In his quest to win Izabela, Wokulski begins frequenting theatres and aristocratic salons; and to help her financially distressed father, founds a company and sets the aristocrats up as shareholders in his business.The indolence of these aristocrats, who secure with their pensions, are too lazy to undertake new business risks, frustrates Wokulski. His ability to make money is respected but his lack of family and social rank is condescended to. Because of his "help" (in secret) to Izabela&♯39;s impecunious but influential father, the girl becomes aware of his affection. 　　A series of unexplainable accidents befall the people and companies responsible for developing the world&♯39;s first supersonic airliner (SST1). A British agent is sent to investigate and with the help of another agent uncovers a plot masterminded by Carl Petersen who stands to gain eight million pounds if the aircraft is not ready by a certain date. The evil Petersen has developed a number of "robots" (actually rather beauti***irls with "electronic brains") to help him sabotage the SST1 project by means of "infrasound" (extreme low frequency sound waves) which can be directed at people or objects with devastating results.

A Girl at My Door

　　满男上了大学，离家很远，可是阿博却不让他骑摩托往返。长大的满男不希望父母的唠叨，要独立地处理自己的事情。这时他特别想念舅舅阿寅。
　　阿泉从名古屋来看望爸爸，可是扑了个空，爸爸跟随另一个女人去了对方的家乡日田。阿泉心中一直有一个梦想，希望靠自己使父母重归于好。在东京，阿泉见到了回家的阿寅，舅舅带着她去茶馆，听她讲述自己的故事。
　　失望之余，阿泉决定去找父亲，满男自告奋勇陪她一同上路。同时到达的还有阿泉的妈妈，陪她来的就是阿寅。在这里，阿泉看到了另一个叫杏子的女人，他让父亲自愿离开都市来到乡村，父亲生活得的确很幸福，这使阿泉打消了重新撮合父母的想法。

　　1940年9月，德、意、日三国成立同盟。山本五十六被任命为日本联合舰队总司令，并不得不“违背自己的意愿”，接受命令对美、英、荷等国开战。1941后12月8日零时，山本五十六亲自下达了“1280”密码命令，并亲自率领部队偷袭美国珍珠港，从而对美军太平洋舰队造成重创，大胜而归。随后山本五十六建议与美国讲和，但意见未被采纳。在指挥中途岛战役时，由于战略上的重大失误，日本海军遭受惨重损失。形势陡然逆转，美军攻势如虹，日军兵败如山倒。瓜达康纳岛上有三万多名日本陆军，他们遭到了美军飞机的昼夜轰炸，陷于绝境。山本五十六派出舰队炮击美军基地，协助尚存的陆军安全撤退。1943年4月18日，山本五十六为了鼓动前线部队的士气，乘坐一架轰炸机到前线视察。没想到日军的密码被美军窃取，美军派出空军机队将山本五十六的座机击落，一代军人山本五十六就此碎尸于太平洋上空。

　　写小说的金孝燮从未真真正正出版过一本象样的书，一次与人争吵后被判入狱，深感自卑的他不断被外界批评为三流作家，生活也很窘迫。可是他却爱上一个已婚女人。而另一个未婚女子深深地爱着这个小说家。未婚女子对作家的爱是毫无条件的，她以前是出版社的编辑，后来在电影院售票，并 同时打几份工。他与作家约会时付咖啡钱，心甘情愿地借钱给作家，为他修改书稿。在作家三十五岁生日时，她带着蛋糕和礼物来到作家的住处想给他一个惊喜，作家却责怪未婚女子来之前不给他打电话。这时，已婚女人从作家的屋里冲出，作家急忙追赶，未婚女子告诉作家，她已做好为他奉献一生的准备，作家明确地告诉未婚女子，他深切地爱着这个已婚的女人。在街上，他对未婚女子大打出手，发泄着的自己的情绪，躲在一旁的未婚女子的男同事把这一幕尽收眼底，对未婚女子表达了爱意，失落的未婚女子与这个男同事发生了关系。

　　一个法国少年和一个阿拉伯少年自幼便是街头的混混，他们缺乏家庭的温暖和社会的关注，以偷窃为乐，但当他们自认为最愚笨的同学摇身成为大富翁时，他们目瞪口呆，习惯了街头恶习的两人在辞工后不久，又陷入了爱情的困惑，最终都被警察带走，但他们对生活已经绝望，剩下的是两人间不变的友谊。

　　幕后花絮
　　本片属于波尔电影，也就是反映在法国的阿尔及利亚后裔人的电影作品。导演沙里夫是阿尔及利亚后裔，本片根据他的自传体小说改编，非常直白地将当时法国社会的阴暗现实反映出来。影片最后点出主题，渴望拆除种族的藩篱，超越肤色和种族和平友好地生活下去。整部电影的叙事手法平平，只是倒叙一段类似“戏中戏”处理得较有复古味道，不失讽刺韵味，人物的心理描写也细致准确，属于一部表现社会底层青年生活的社会写实作品。

　　女作家海伦（安妮·班克罗夫特 Anne Bancroft 饰）住在纽约，她常常为自己不能买到所需的珍稀图书而沮丧。偶然，她在一本杂志上发现一则来自一家英国旧书店刊登的广告，便抱着试探的心态给这家位于伦敦查令十字街84号的马克书店老板写了求书单。很快，马克书店给了她一个超乎想象的惊喜：她买到了自己一直苦苦寻找的珍品书籍，并且还获得了弗兰克（安东尼·霍普金斯 Anthony Hopkins 饰）对书籍珍本的诚意推荐。自此，两个热爱书籍的人开始了长达20年的书信来往。海伦不仅向弗兰克求购难寻书籍，还与他分享自己的读书心得。两人互相交流文学观点，评述名家作品。弗兰克奔波四处为海伦购买书籍珍本，海伦则从美国寄来丰盛食物，为书店员工们缓解因英国实物配给制而造成的食物匮乏难题。两人通过持续书信来往成为精神至交。海伦一直想前往伦敦拜访弗兰克，却因为各种突发情况而未能如愿。直到她收到弗兰克去世消息的书信，她才终于坐上了飞往英国的飞机，而此时，查林十字街84号的马克书店却面临着被拆迁……
