The Doll is an adaptation of the novel, The Doll (novel) by Bolesław Prus, which is regarded by many as one of the finest Polish novels ever written and, along with Pharaoh (novel), made Bolesław Prus a potential candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature. The influence of Émile Zola is evident, and some have compared the novel to Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert; both were Prus&♯39;s contemporaries. The movie, however, may be more compared to Stendhal&♯39;s Le Rouge et le Noir, (The Red and the Black). The Doll constitutes a panorama of life in Warsaw between 1878 and 1879, and at the same time is a subtle story of three generations of Polish idealists, their psychological complications, their involvement in the history of the nineteenth century, social dramas, moral problems and the experience of tragic existence. At the same time this story describes the disintegration of social relationships and the growing separation of a society whose aristocratic elite spreads the models of vanity and idleness. In the bad air of a backward country, anti-Semitic ideas are born, valuable individuals meet obstacles on their way, and scoundrels are successful. This poetic love story follows a nouveau riche merchant, Stanislaw Wokulski, through a series of trials and tribulations occasioned by his obsessive passion for an aristocratic beauty, Izabela Lecka, played by the famous Polish actress, Beata Tyszkiewicz. Plot: As a descendant of an impoverished Polish noble family, young Wokulski is forced to work as a waiter at Hopfer&♯39;s, a Warsaw restaurant, while dreaming of a life in science. After taking part in the failed 1863 Uprising against Tsarist Russia, he is sentenced to exile in Siberia. On eventual return to Warsaw, he becomes a salesman at Mincel&♯39;s haberdashery. Marrying the late owner&♯39;s widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to set up a partnership with a Russian merchant he had met while in exile. The two merchants go to Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and Wokulski makes a fortune supplying the Russian Army. The enterprising Wokulski now proves a romantic at heart, falling in love with Izabela, daughter of the vacuous, bankrupt aristocrat, Tomasz Łęcki. In his quest to win Izabela, Wokulski begins frequenting theatres and aristocratic salons; and to help her financially distressed father, founds a company and sets the aristocrats up as shareholders in his business.The indolence of these aristocrats, who secure with their pensions, are too lazy to undertake new business risks, frustrates Wokulski. His ability to make money is respected but his lack of family and social rank is condescended to. Because of his "help" (in secret) to Izabela&♯39;s impecunious but influential father, the girl becomes aware of his affection. 精神抑郁的画家(齐木茂饰)在去下水道中寻找灵感的时候，意外发现了一条人鱼(染井真理饰)。而这条人鱼竟然是画家曾经在河中遇见过的。画家开始为人鱼作画，而此时才发现人鱼的腹部因为某种原因而溃烂。长满了大大小小的脓包和肉瘤，然后画家将人鱼带回家养在了浴缸里。画家买来药为人鱼治疗，但人鱼拒绝了。人鱼要求画家为自己作画，人鱼腹部的烂疮慢慢扩展到全身并进一步恶化。先是慢慢向人鱼的上身扩展，然后流出各种颜色的脓水，各种蛆虫，长短不一，五颜六色，伴随着黏液从人鱼身上的脓包中喷射而出，混成一团，布满了浴缸以及浴缸周围的地板。而浴缸里的水也呈现出一种复杂的颜色，甚至变的粘稠。最后，脓疮蔓延到人鱼的脸上，布满了整个半边脸，当然也会涌出脓水和蛆虫。此时的人鱼已经变成了令人作呕的怪物。最后人鱼开始呕吐，吐出来的也是蛆虫和粘稠的脓水。
这期间人鱼痛苦万分而画家则给予人鱼温情的关怀，帮人鱼挤脓，抽出身体里的蛆等等。而画家的画也伴随着人鱼的状况而改变，直到人鱼死去，画作也最终完成，一张布满五彩脓疮的脸。神情恍惚的画家肢解了人鱼，然而在人鱼的腹中竟然发现了一个婴儿。最后警察在画家邻居的举报下逮捕了画家 。
When the single middle-aged Luis travels from Barcelona to bury the remains of his mother in the vault of his family in Segovia, he is lodged by his aunt Pilar in her old house where he spent his summer of 1936 with her. 大卫·田纳特David Tennant和库什·珍宝Cush Jumbo（《傲骨之战》）共同出演的《麦克白》本周在西区正式开幕，剧组也宣布此前录制于丹玛尔仓库剧院首轮演出现场的影像版将于2025年2月5日起登陆影剧院！ 本版《麦克白》导演是麦克斯·韦伯斯特Max Webster（《少年派的奇幻漂流》），观众入座时佩戴耳机，环境音效以3D声效的形式在耳机中播放，制造不安、恐怖的氛围。而现场观众从耳机中听到的声效也会混合到影像版的音轨中。
The film (and the acting) is superbly done, but the story is intense. I like it for its&♯39; dark, thick, "Cul du Sac" psychology but it is certainly not for everyone for that very reason. Set in isolated, rural France makes this film all the more desperate. The film is about strenuous relationships, loyalty - and despair. It is about accepting hardships without really understanding them. It is also about pity and how it is to be distinguished from love and admiration. I&♯39;ve seen many French films with the same intensity and I&♯39;m guessing that it will be mostly the French who will enjoy this film. The acting is superb in this film – if you&♯39;re in the right state of mind and don&♯39;t loose your concentration. Jean-François Stevenin ALWAYS impresses me. He doesn&♯39;t disappoint me here either. For general audiences, however, I&♯39;d recommend his performance in "Deux Lions au Soleil" which is much more easily palatable than "Peux de Vaches". Despite the fact that I like "Peux de Vaches", I have difficulties recommending it to anyone other than French audiences and perhaps someone with a morose demeanor.
